Dr. John Barrett is Head of Academic Studies at the Nimbus Centre for Embedded Systems Research at Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and Group Director of the Centre’s Smart Systems Integration Research Group. His research is focused on packaging, miniaturisation and embedding of smart systems in materials, objects and structures with particular emphasis on reliability in challenging and harsh application environments. He has been a lecturer and researcher in CIT since 1999 and was previously Assistant Director of the Irish National Microelectronics Research Centre, now Tyndall National Institute. He has been active in Irish and European R&D projects in the areas of packaging and systems integration for almost 30 years and has over 100 publications in topics related to his field.

John Barrett has worked on national, EU and industry-funded research projects in his field for over 30 years and has collaborated with research centres, academic institutes and companies throughout Ireland and Europe. He was one of the team of three who won national funding in 2007 to establish the Nimbus Centre for Embedded Systems Research, CIT’s first dedicated research building.
